“I heard you called?”
It was one in the morning, and as soon as the phone rang I knew it was him.
“Are you all right?” I asked.
“I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”
I’d become a connoisseur of my husband’s vocal inflections. He hadn’t sounded like that since before the night he tried to kill me. He sounded like himself.
“How’s Damien?”
He breathed into the receiver, cleared his throat. I waited, hearing people talking in the background.
“I’m managing him.”
“How?”
He wasn’t going to answer.
